THE FACES OF WELCOME

In 2007 Caserta joined the SPRAR network: Protection System for Asylum Seekers and Refugees, welcoming 10 migrants.

Today Caserta hosts the largest Sprar in Campania with 151 male and 8 female beneficiaries.

In collaboration with the Caserta Città Viva associative network, professional training courses, bilateral inclusion initiatives and territorial requalification have been activated which have made Caserta an example of excellence in Italy.

Thanks to the Sprar, children are educated, taught a trade, and receive health, psychological and legal assistance. One of the flagships is the short supply chain for the food supply of the beneficiaries, involving small local realities. In this way, the Sprar has become the nucleus of a series of virtuous activities and mechanisms that have had a positive impact on the entire population of Caserta.

The Self-managed Social Center Ex Canapificio, main manager of the Caserta Sprar, was evacuated by order of the Santa Maria Capua Vetere prosecutor on 12 March 2019 due to structural safety problems. Since then, its numerous activities have been carried out in makeshift support points (a daily mobile garrison was set up in the Piazza della Prefettura for the whole spring-summer 2019) or in structures that have temporarily offered their hospitality. In recent months there have been at least two thefts that the old structure has suffered. It goes without saying that the stolen goods consist of goods purchased with state money.

During the World Refugee Day concert, on 19 June 2019 at Villa Giaquinto, the Mayor relaunched the commitment not to abandon this precious network of inclusion and hospitality by talking about a possible temporary location, namely the Ex Asilo di via Barducci in a cross of via Ferrarecce, abandoned and closed since 2015. Today the new designated headquarters of the CSA Ex Canapificio is the Ex Caserma Sacchi, but the municipality still lingers. The operators and volunteers hope to be able to name their new Casa del Sociale as soon as possible after Mamadou Sy, the beloved president of the Senegalese association, who passed away in November 2019.
